Week One: Welcome Post

Welcome to first blog post.

I think I should start with the reasons why I chose to study Journalism:

1) I always had an interest in writing 2) I also always had an opinion to share with anyone who would listen. 3) I ran my own debating society in my secondary school and even won a few competitions.

Running my own debating society really taught me how to articulate my opinions and points of information. It made me feel accomplished and sparked my interest in research. Although I don’t consider myself to be quite the Vincent Browne just yet, I do believe I am making progress on where I want to be.

As part of my course, I can choose two arts modules. I chose the modules English and Sociology. In Sociology, we study media audience.

On Wednesday, we learned about ‘The Follower Factor’ from a New York Times article (linked below) that discussed the stealing of one’s identity online and pose as a bot.

I was quite shocked when I heard the extreme lengths people go to steal an identity. Celebrities even buy these bots to help influence their media influence. It made the idea of deleting all social media and hiding under a rock very appealing.

Where would you draw the line on online validation and sheer desperation?

I hope you liked my first blog post and decide to come back next time for another instalment.
